Ellen was born in October 1808 in Pennington and her baptism took place on October 23rd, 1808 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1  Ellen's father was James Mather and her mother was Ann Battersby. She had a brother and two sisters, named William, Alice and Mary.  She was the second youngest of the four known children.
