Alice was born in May 1804 in Pennington and her baptism took place on May 26th, 1804 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1  Alice's father was James Mather and her mother was Ann Battersby. She had a brother and two sisters, named William, Ellen and Mary.  She was the second oldest of the four known children.
