Mary was born in January 1812 in Pennington and her baptism took place on January 25th, 1812 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1  Mary's father was James Mather and her mother was Ann Battersby. She had a brother and two sisters, named William, Alice and Ellen.  She was the youngest of the four known children.
