William was born in 1824 in Little Bolton and his baptism took place on January 9th, 1825 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  William's father was Simon Mather and his mother was Ellen Brooks Unsworth.  His paternal grandparents were Jeffery Mather and Ann Coop. He had four brothers named Joseph, Geffrey, Simon and Thomas.  He was the third oldest of the five children. He had a half-sister named Jane.  He died in an accident or as a result of an injury, Scaffold on which he was working in a trial shaft gave way. , at the age of 47 on November 1st, 1871 in Edgworth.2
