William's father was Nicholas Mather and his mother was Alice Earnshaw.  His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Margaret Pomfret. He had two brothers and four sisters, named John, James, Sarah, Margaret, Jane and Nancy.  He was the oldest of the seven children. He had a half-sister named Mary.  He died at the age of 67 in 1929.
