Jane's father was Nicholas Mather and her mother was Alice Earnshaw.  Her paternal grandparents were William Mather and Margaret Pomfret. She had three brothers and three sisters, named William, John, James, Sarah, Margaret and Nancy.  She was the second youngest of the seven children. She had a half-sister named Mary.
