Marah, known as Mary, was born in June 1880 in Samlesbury.1  Mary's father was Nicholas Mather and her mother was Jane Ann Cowell (nee Eddlestone).  Her paternal grandparents were William Mather and Margaret Pomfret. She had three half-brothers and four half-sisters, named William, John, James, Sarah, Margaret, Jane and Nancy.
