William's father was William Mather and his mother was Margaret Mather. He had four brothers named Nicholas, John, Richard and James. He was the fourth oldest of the five known children. He died at the age of 48 in 1639 in Bolton. His burial was in 1639 at St. Peter's (Bolton).¹

- In William's will he names his 5 sons as "Nicholas, John, Richard, William and James" in that order, as also identifies the three latter being the youngest.
