Walter was born in December 1890 at Bolton Emmanuel.1  Walter's father was William Mather and his mother was Mary McClellan.  His paternal grandparents were George Mather and Esther Glazebrook. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Samuel, John, Arthur, Emily and Margaret.  He was the third youngest of the six children.
