Thomas was born on June 11th, 1779 in Liverpool and his baptism took place on June 27th, 1779 at St. Nicholas (L'pool).1  Thomas' father was Richard Mather and his mother was Ann (Nancy) Tyrer. He had four brothers and five sisters, named John, Henry, Richard, Henry, Betty, Ann, Sarah, Hannah and Hannah.  He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
