Stanley's father was Joseph Mather and his mother was Jane Davies. His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Maria Hulme. He had five brothers and three sisters, named James, Joseph, John, Robert, William, Nell, Maria and Janie. He was the sixth oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 67 on March 27th, 1986 in Salford. His burial was in March 1986 in Horwich.²³
