Simon was born in 1805 in WestLeigh and his baptism took place on November 17th, 1805 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1  Simon's father was Simon Mather and his mother was Sarah (Sally) Woodward. He had two brothers and a sister, named John, James and Elizabeth.  He was the youngest of the four children.

‌Simon and Jane were married in a religious ceremony on September 16th, 1827 at St. Mary (Deane) by Curate Thomas Airey and witnessed by Abraham Boardman & James Marsh.3   They had a son and three daughters, named Peter, Elizabeth, Sarah and Ellen.
