Peter was born in 1838 in Hindley and his baptism took place there on September 16th, 1838.1  Peter's father was Simon Mather and his mother was Jane Green.  His paternal grandparents were Simon Mather and Sarah (Sally) Woodward. He had three sisters named Elizabeth, Sarah and Ellen.  He was the second youngest of the four children.
