John was born in 1797 in WestLeigh and his baptism took place on February 5th, 1797 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1  John's father was Simon Mather and his mother was Sarah (Sally) Woodward. He had two brothers and a sister, named James, Simon and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the four children.
