Sarah was born in February 1817 in Billinge and her baptism took place on February 9th, 1817 at St. Aidan (Billinge).¹

Sarah's father was John Mather and her mother was Betty Baxter. Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Ann Berrington. She had a brother and a sister, named Richard and Jane. She was the youngest of the three known children.
