Robert was born in December 1846 in Chorlton (Lancs) and his baptism took place on February 14th, 1847 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1 2  Robert's father was Henry Mather and his mother was Ellen Horsefield.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Margaret Robinson; his maternal grandparents were John Horsefield and Betty Booth. He had two brothers named John and William.  He was the oldest of the three children. He had a half-sister named Esther.

‌Robert and Jane were married in a civil ceremony in January 1872 in Bolton.3
