Mary's father was Berry (Bury) Mather and her mother was Sarah (Sally) Greenwood. Her paternal grandparents were Berry (Bury) Mather and Ellen (Nelly) Burton. She had two brothers and a sister, named Greenwood, John and Betty. She was the oldest of the four known children.
