Mary's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Harriet Horrocks. Her paternal grandparents were Simon Mather and Ellen Brooks Unsworth. She had a sister named Eliza. She was the younger of the two children. She had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named William, Alice and Mary. She died at 6 months old in June 1859 in Little Bolton.¹
