Mary's father was William Pickup and her mother was Harriet Horrocks. She had a brother and a sister, named William and Alice. She was the second oldest of the three children. She had two half-sisters named Eliza and Mary.

General Notes
- In 1871 Mary J P Mather (2) was at Cox Green, Turton with her older sisters Eliza Ann (14) and Alice A (4).
  
  In 1881, Harriet Mather was housekeeper at "De Rothwell Arms", Turton for William Pickup (39, Unmarried). With her were Mary Jane (12) and William Henry (9). It is likely that Mary Jane is William Pickup's daughter as she was registerted illegitimate with full name Mary Jane Pickup Mather.
