Mary was born in September 1856 in Whitefield.1  Mary's father was Robert Mather and her mother was Ellen Greenhalgh.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Mary Allen. She had six brothers named William, James, John, Mark, Robert and Samuel.  She was the second oldest of the seven known children.
