Robert was born in 1869.  Robert's father was Robert Mather and his mother was Ellen Greenhalgh.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Mary Allen. He had five brothers and a sister, named William, James, John, Mark, Samuel and Mary.  He was the sixth oldest of the seven known children.
