Mary was born in June 1846 in Whitefield.1  Mary's father was James Mather and her mother was Eliza Morris.  Her paternal grandparents were Jesse Mather and Hannah Emmerson. She had two sisters named Hannah and Alice.  She was the second oldest of the three children.

‌Mary and James were married in a religious ceremony on September 23rd, 1866 at All Saints (Stand).2  The family line is yet to be completed.
