Hannah was born in March 1843 in Whitefield.¹

Hannah's father was James Mather and her mother was Eliza Morris. Her paternal grandparents were Jesse Mather and Hannah Emmerson. She had two sisters named Mary and Alice. She was the oldest of the three children.
