Mary was born in May 1764 in Bamber Bridge and her baptism took place on May 20th, 1764 in Blackburn.1  Mary's father was Joshua Mather and her mother was Margaret Fielden. She had five brothers and four sisters, named John, Joshua, Thomas, Joshua, John, Sarah, Hannah, Margaret and Betty.  She was the third oldest of the ten children.
