John's father was Joshua Mather and his mother was Margaret Fielden. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Joshua, Thomas, Joshua, John, Mary, Sarah, Hannah, Margaret and Betty.  He was the oldest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 17 in October 1777 in Walton-le-Dale.  He was buried on October 12th, 1777 in Walton-le-Dale.¹
