Magdalen was born in August 1762 in Atherton and her baptism took place on August 22nd, 1762 in Chowbent.1  Magdalen's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Mary Mather. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Henry, Thomas, John, Batrix, Ann, Jane and Isabella.  She was the second oldest of the eight children.
