Luke was born in 1796 in Middleton and his baptism took place on April 17th, 1796 at St. Leonard (Middleton).1  Luke's father was James Mather and his mother was Alice Collinge. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Richard, Moses, David, Leah, Sarah and Lucy.  He was the third youngest of the eight children.
