Leah was born in 1784 in Middleton and her baptism took place on December 26th, 1784 at St. Leonard (Middleton) conducted by Curate James Archer.1  Leah's father was James Mather and her mother was Alice Collinge. She had five brothers and two sisters, named John, Richard, Luke, Moses, David, Sarah and Lucy.  She was the oldest of the eight children.
