John was born in September 1870 in Turton.1  John's father was James Mather and his mother was Mary Jane Worswick.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Ann Ainsworth. He had a sister named Jane.  He was the older of the two children.  He died at 9 months old in June 1871 in Turton.  He was buried on June 4th, 1871 at St. Anne (Turton).2 1
