John's father was John Mather and his mother was Margaret (Peggy) Smith.  His paternal grandparents were Joshua Mather and Margaret Fielden. He had a brother and four sisters, named Joshua, Ann, Peggy, Elizabeth and Mary.  He was the youngest of the six known children.  He died at the age of 78 on November 14th, 1889 in Preston.²
