John was born on November 3rd, 1811 in Walton-le-Dale and his baptism took place there on November 24th, 1811.1  John's father was John Mather and his mother was Margaret (Peggy) Smith.  His paternal grandparents were Joshua Mather and Margaret Fielden. He had a brother and four sisters, named Joshua, Ann, Peggy, Elizabeth and Mary.  He was the youngest of the six known children.  He died at the age of 78 on November 14th, 1889 in Preston.2
