James was born on January 30th, 1833 in Whitefield and his baptism took place on March 10th, 1833 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1  James' father was Peter Taylor Mather and his mother was Alice Rothwell.  His paternal grandparents were James Taylor and Rachel Madther. He had a brother and two sisters, named Samuel, Mary and Ann.  He was the second youngest of the four known children.
