James was born on February 16th, 1871 in Bury and his baptism took place on March 29th, 1871 at St. John (Bury).1  James' father was Edmund (Edwin) Mather and his mother was Betsy Wood.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Sarah Butterworth. He had a brother and two sisters, named Percy, Margery and Annie.  He was the oldest of the four children.
