George's father was John Mather and his mother was Alice Gore. He had two brothers and two sisters, named George, David, Sarah and Mary.  He was the oldest of the five known children.  He died at the age of 1 in April 1812 in Bolton.  He was buried on April 26th, 1812 at St. Peter's (Bolton).²
