George's father was William Mather and his mother was Sarah Horrocks.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Ellen Rigby. He had a sister named Alice.  He was the younger of the two children. He had two half-sisters named Alice and Ann.  He died in 1846 in Bolton.²
