Bertha's father was Charles Mather and her mother was Sarah Morris.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Stott. She had four brothers and two sisters, named James, Arthur, Charles, Oswald, Gertrude and Ada.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.

‌Bertha and Franz were married in a religious & civil ceremony in 1910 at Bank Street Unitarian.²
