Murrell was born in 1929. Murrell's father was Glen Hunter Lyman and her mother was Lillian M Mellor. Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Alvin Lyman and Lavinia Hunter. She had two brothers and a sister, named Rodney, Murrel and Iris. She was the oldest of the four children. She died at the age of 80 in 2009.
