Thomas was born in 1869 in Neston.1  Thomas' father was Thomas Lewis and his mother was Martha Smith.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Lewis and Catherine Dunkan. He had four brothers named James, Joseph, John and Robert.  He was the youngest of the five known children.
