James was born in 1857 in Neston.1  James' father was Thomas Lewis and his mother was Martha Smith.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Lewis and Catherine Dunkan. He had four brothers named Joseph, John, Robert and Thomas.  He was the oldest of the five known children.
