John was born in 1863 in Neston.1  John's father was Thomas Lewis and his mother was Martha Smith.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Lewis and Catherine Dunkan. He had four brothers named James, Joseph, Robert and Thomas.  He was the third oldest of the five known children.
