Norman was born in November 1930 in Liverpool.¹

Norman's father was John William Lewis and his mother was Evelyn Mary Dittmer. His maternal grandparents were William Augistin Dittmer and Sarah (Sally) Alice Griffiths. He had three brothers and a sister, named Kenneth, Alan, Gordon and Dorothy. He was the second youngest of the five children.
