William's father was John Henry Dittmer and his mother was Elizabeth Maud Cunningham. His paternal grandparents were Louis Dettmer and <female> Dettmer; his maternal grandparents were John Cunningham and Bridget Martin. He had three brothers and a sister, named Sidney, Leonard, Albert and Eva. He was the second oldest of the five children. He died at the age of 69 in April 1950 in Kirkdale. His burial was on April 14th, 1950 in Everton.³⁴
