Alan's father was John William Lewis and his mother was Evelyn Mary Dittmer. His maternal grandparents were William Augistin Dittmer and Sarah (Sally) Alice Griffiths. He had three brothers and a sister, named Kenneth, Norman, Gordon and Dorothy. He was the third oldest of the five children.
