Josiah was born in January 1841 in Ashton-under-Lyne.1  Josiah's father was John Lees and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Buckley.  His maternal grandparents were John Buckley and Mary Hirst. He had four brothers and a sister, named James, Joseph, John, George and Susannah.  He was the youngest of the six children.
