John was born in 1832 in Ashton-under-Lyne.1  John's father was John Lees and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Buckley.  His maternal grandparents were John Buckley and Mary Hirst. He had four brothers and a sister, named James, Joseph, George, Josiah and Susannah.  He was the third youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 85 in 1917.



John's family with Martha Needham

‌John and Martha were married in a religious ceremony on June 9th, 1853 in Ashton-under-Lyne.  They had a daughter named Bessie.  The family line is yet to be completed.
