Elizabeth's father was Benjamin Knowles and her mother was Christian Entwistle.  Her paternal grandparents were James Knowles and Agnes Bertwistle. She had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Benjamin, William, Hannah, Mary and Jane.  She was the third youngest of the seven children.
