Mary was born in February 1841 in Tottington.1  Mary's father was William Kay and her mother was Mary Chadwick.  Her paternal grandparents were James Kay and Betty Moband (tbc). She had a brother and two sisters, named Edward, Susannah and Alice. She had an adopted sister named Betty.
