Clara was born in 1900 in Bolton.1  Clara's father was James Howcroft and her mother was Hannah Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were William Mather and Margaret Gerrard. She had five brothers and a sister, named Albert, Herbert, Wilfred, Fred, Frank and Elizabeth.  She was the youngest of the seven children.
