Richard was born in November 1746 in Blackburn and his baptism took place on November 9th, 1746 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Blackburn).1  Richard's father was Gyles Howarth and his mother was Dorothy Richardson.  His paternal grandparents were Giles Howarth and Mary Yates. He had a brother and two sisters, named Henry, Margaret and Mary. He had two half-sisters named Mary and Grace.
