James was born in 1843 in Turton.1  James' father was James Carr Holt and his mother was Alice Rothwell.  His paternal grandparents were <male> Carr and Ann Holt. He had a brother and two sisters, named John, Mary and Sarah.  He was the oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 29 in 1872.
