Sarah's father was Matthew Hirst and her mother was Amelia Fox. Her paternal grandparents were Jonas Hirst and Hannah Eastwood. She had a brother and a sister, named Herbert and Lucy. She was the oldest of the three children. She died at the age of 71 in 1933.
